Once you’ve eliminated unnecessary and potentially harmful chemicals from your food, the next step is to remove those chemicals from your home and body products. I only use regular toothpaste once-in-awhile, like if I’m traveling and forgot to bring my all-natural stuff. But typically I opt for all-natural toothpastes. Even though you spit it out, your mouth is very porous and can absorb ingredients quickly. Since toothpaste is something you use twice a day, it’s important to consider what goes into it and how those ingredients impact your health.
Typical toothpastes contain harsh chemicals that can be abrasive on your teeth and gums, not to mention questionable ingredients like triclosan, DEA and fluoride. Triclosan is often present in hand sanitizer and has been linked to thyroid issues, antibiotic resistance and hormone regulation issues in animals. DEA, full name diethanolamine, also disrupts hormones and has caused kidney disease and cancer in rats, according to a study by the National Institutes of Health. Fluoride has mixed reviews — fluoride is a known toxin at high doses and can cause nausea to severe nerve damage, but it also helps to prevent cavities. But that’s quite a risk to take for a healthy mouth. It’s seems more sensible to eat a healthy diet and practicing good oral hygiene and avoid fluoride toothpastes.
There are quite a few natural toothpastes you can buy online on Amazon and other natural retailers. Here are three great ones to keep your chompers white while keeping your body healthy!
The Honest Company: I’ve been using this toothpaste for awhile now and I love the flavor. It doesn’t taste fake or chemically at all, just fresh and mint-y! It also doesn’t contain fluoride, which I prefer because there is enough evidence out there to show that fluoride can be harmful. Yes, it can help prevent cavities but other research shows that fluoride is a toxin that if ingested can impact blood glucose levels and cause skin rashes.
Tom’s of Maine: We’ve seen this toothpaste on grocery store shelves for awhile now and there’s a reason for that — Tom’s is a company that’s committed to safe and environmentally-friendly products. Tom’s toothpaste comes in a variety of flavors for both kids and adults. Not all of the company’s toothpastes are free of fluoride, but all of the toothpastes are clearly labeled. You can also choose toothpastes without Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) — a foaming agent that can damage gum tissue and cause stomach aches if ingested.
The Holistic Science Company’s Multicare Mineral Toothpaste: This toothpaste is fluoride-free, sulfate-free and does not contain any artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, or preservatives. The all-natural toothpaste is made with myrrh gum powder, baking soda, sea salts, CoQ10, minerals and xylitol. “Xylitol is beneficial because of its ability to re-mineralize teeth and prevent bacteria from turning into enamel damaging acids,” says the company. The company wants to expand its operations and make its toothpaste more eco-friendly. To do this, it launched a campaign on Indiegogo.
